The word unmetered does not fully describe a network service. It can indicate that billing is not based on a fixed volume of transferred data, but the exact contract and plan determine what is included. Read the traffic terms together with the port specification before comparing prices.

Separate port capacity from transfer policy

A port rate describes a potential transfer rate at the server connection. A transfer policy describes how usage is counted, charged or restricted. Neither establishes the speed every remote user will receive. Ask whether the connection is shared or dedicated, whether any sustained rate is committed, and how inbound and outbound traffic are treated.

Translate your workload into useful numbers

Prepare an estimate of average throughput, peak throughput and the duration of peaks. Include large backups or synchronization jobs. A service delivering modest traffic all day behaves differently from a download platform that releases large files to many users at once.

As an arithmetic ceiling, continuously filling a 1 Gbps connection for 30 days would transfer 324 decimal TB before overhead. This is a unit conversion, not a promise that a plan will deliver that volume. Real throughput also depends on storage, processing, routing and the receiving systems.

Request clear answers to these questions

• What exactly does unmetered mean for this product?
• Are there acceptable-use, fair-use or sustained-utilization conditions?
• What happens during congestion or an attack?
• Are there restrictions relevant to my application or distribution model?
• Can the provider supply a representative test endpoint?
• What upgrade options exist if peak traffic exceeds the selected port?

Compare complete operating costs

Include storage, backup transfers, required management, IP allocations and any separately priced services in your comparison. Keep written confirmation of the selected configuration and terms. A lower monthly price is not necessarily the lower cost if an important requirement needs a separate service.
